The Chiang Mai Songkran Festival

The Songkran festival is one of Thailand’s most loved festivals, and runs from approximately 13-15 April every year to celebrate the Thai New Year. During the Songkran, traditionally mornings begin with merit-making, visiting local temples and offering food to the Buddhist monks. The practice of pouring water onto Buddha statues, the young and the elderly are also an important way to symbolise the purification of washing away one’s sins. The Songkran is better known among visiting tourists for its water festival celebrations, which are especially popular in Chiang Mai, as streets are closed and both locals and visitors to Thailand enjoy water fight celebrations to welcome the Thai New Year.
